Holger Rune is nearing his comeback to the ATP Tour after being sidelined for nine months due to an Achilles injury.

Rune suffered the setback at the Stockholm Open in October 2025 and later revealed he broke the proximal part of his left Achilles before undergoing successful surgery.

The Dane had aimed to make a return to action at the Hamburg Open during the clay swing, but ended up withdrawing from the ATP 500 event, as well as Roland Garros.

Last month, Rune pulled out of both Queen’s and Wimbledon, but revealed in a statement he was ‘getting closer every day’ and that the progress was ‘very satisfying’.

Now, ahead of the North American hard-court swing, the 23-year-old has issued a positive update on his recovery.

Holger Rune responds to fan’s question about US Open return

Since his surgery, Rune has been posting updates on social media about his recovery process.

In his latest post on Instagram, Rune uploaded a video of him hitting balls with what appears to be near-full intensity.

One fan in the comment section of the post asked: “Please are you playing US Open ? We miss you.”

In response, Rune said: “That’s the plan.”

Rune’s injury has seen him plummet down the ATP rankings, with the former world number four now placed 81st.

He missed his title defence at the Barcelona Open and was not able to defend the large sums of ATP points he picked up last year at big tournaments, particularly Indian Wells, where he reached the final in 2025.

Holger Rune’s record at the US Open over the years

Of the four Grand Slams, the US Open is the tournament Rune has had the least success at over the years.

His best result at Flushing Meadows came during the 2022 season, where he made the third round.

Rune only won one match at the US Open that year, though, having advanced via a walkover in the second round before losing to Cam Norrie in the third.

He suffered first-round exits in 2021, 2023 and 2024, and got beaten in the second round at last year’s edition of the hard-court major.

From now until the 2026 US Open, Rune has 300 ATP points to defend across the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open.

If he does not appear at either, Rune could be in danger of falling outside the top 104, meaning he won’t automatically qualify for the US Open, and will either have to come through qualifying or receive a wildcard for the event.
