Kamaru Usman is contemplating retirement after his loss to Dricus du Plessis this past weekend at UFC Oklahoma City.

Usman moved up to 185 pounds in pursuit of two-division glory, and a win over former champion du Plessis could have fast-tracked him to a title shot. However, the 39-year-old failed to take down the South African as per his usual game plan and was stunned multiple times with a variety of strikes en route to a unanimous decision loss.

At the UFC Oklahoma City post-fight presser, Dana White had said that “The Nigerian Nightmare” is definitely not retiring and he still has enough left in the tank to compete at the highest level.

Meanwhile, after the loss, when Usman was asked if he would move down to welterweight or continue fighting at 185 pounds, he said that he needs to discuss his UFC future with his team and then plan his next move accordingly.

Earlier today on Pound 4 Pound, the former UFC welterweight titleholder, while talking about potential retirement, said:

“I have to sit with the team and assess the place where I’m at in my career, and just see whether it’s worth continuing to do this.”

Henry Cejudo says Kamaru Usman was fighting Dricus du Plessis with a major injury

Former UFC double champion Henry Cejudo claimed during the same sitdown that Kamaru Usman fought Dricus du Plessis with a torn pec and therefore was not able to score any takedowns or do anything effective to turn the bout in his favor. He said:

“You fought with a torn pec. I didn’t like you taking this fight because if you’re f*cking fighting with one pec, Kamaru. A lot of people were giving you a lot of sh*t because DDP was saying he was stopping your takedowns and whatnot. But how can you get to those positions if you don’t have a f*cking pec?… I got your back on this.”

Usman, on the other hand, made no excuses nor blamed his injury as the main reason for his loss. He added:

“We roll the dice every time. So there are no excuses. And sometimes it works out, and no one ever finds out. But this time it didn’t work out. It is not something I want to bring up… 100% Everyone knows that I’m a wrestler, and I wanted to utilize that, but it was just tough to do it.”
