Resident Evil 2 has been seeing a resurgence in players after the smashing success of the newest film, which makes sense given their similarly shared settings during the outbreak of Raccoon City. While Resident Evil 2’s status as the best starting point and one of the highest-rated games in the franchise certainly helps, there is yet another incentive for players to flock to the game thanks to its newest multiplayer capabilities.
While not officially associated with Capcom in any way, the fan-made co-op mod created by Shopcreeper01 on NexusMods has already been a bit of a hit with players, letting you fight alongside the undead horrors alongside a friend in split-screen co-op.
Resident Evil 2’s Co-Op Mod Is A Hit With Fans
While the mod does come with the caveat that it can’t be played online and only works with local split-screen, the footage showcased by RENews on X already has fans losing their minds over the gameplay potential being shown.
As detailed in the gameplay overview, the mod has numerous functions to help streamline the multiplayer experience, including a quick access wheel for easier communication or gameplay options, separate inventories, difficulties, and a revive system to support your teammate.
On top of being able to swap to any character in the game, you can also play alongside an AI companion instead, similar to Sheva from Resident Evil 5, which you can control with the modded in-game communication menu.
It’s Not Perfect, But It Works
Although the mod has drawn some criticism for its AI-assisted coding disclaimer that some players have pointed out could contribute to the numerous bugs players have been encountering while trying to use it, the mod is still a pretty impressive fan project that has already received a big update helping to address some of these issues.
It isn’t too surprising to see how much demand there is for a true multiplayer Resident Evil experience in the modern age, which Capcom’s own developers have been experimenting with for years. While the mod might lack many of the features and online capabilities you would expect from an official release, it’s still an impressive project that can hopefully be refined to offer a new way to experience Resident Evil 2’s beloved survival horror story.
