The $200 nostalgia trip Riot accidentally tried to sell us: Devs react to Classic skin backlash

So, Riot Games almost pulled a fast one on the League of Legends community, and the internet reacted exactly how you would expect. Total, unadulterated chaos.

Everyone has been hyped out of their minds for League Classic. The mode promises a beautiful, time-traveling journey back to the golden era of 2011 through 2014. We are talking old-school mechanics, the original Summoner’s Rift, and 60 champions with their delightfully broken, pre-rework ability kits.

But when the mode hit the PBE test servers, players realized that nostalgia apparently comes with a hefty subscription fee.

The Five Dollar Retro Tax

The whole point of playing a classic mode is to bask in the glorious, low-polygon jank of the past. If you are playing old Evelynn, you want to actually look like old Evelynn, not her hyper-polished modern counterpart. Seeing modern character models running around a vintage map completely breaks the illusion.

Yet when players logged in to the test server, they found a nasty surprise. The original, pre-rework base visuals were locked away. If you wanted that authentic 2011 pixelated drip, you had to buy “Classic Skin Tokens” for 500 Riot Points pop. That is roughly five dollars per champion. If you wanted to unlock the look for the full launch roster, you were looking at a bill of about $200.

Charging players real money just to make a retro game mode actually look retro is a bold strategy, to say the least.

The Multi-Layered Disaster

The backlash was instant, and honestly, the community had a point. Beyond the obvious wallet-gouging, the execution created a weird mismatch. If you dropped the cash to buy your favorite champion’s old look, it did not fix the rest of the match. Most players in your lobby were not going to drop hundreds of dollars on retro skins. You would end up playing a bizarre hybrid game where a few low-res champions fought alongside highly detailed, modern characters.

To make matters worse, the audio was completely disconnected. The original voice lines were missing, meaning these newly paywalled retro models were spouting modern dialogue. It felt less like a passion project for the fans and more like a poorly assembled cash grab.

The Quickest Pivot in the West

Thankfully, Riot realized they had stepped on a massive landmine. Game developer Brian “Feralpony” Feeney dropped an official video addressing the drama, and the corporate pivot was swift.

Every single classic skin is now completely unlocked and free for all champions on the PBE. Even better, Riot is officially making these retro visuals the default appearance for the game mode soon, completely wiping out the modern base skins. They are also hustling to re-add as much of the original voice acting as humanly possible before the official launch.

Community Manager Bwoffa even took to X to celebrate with a casual “classic skins ftw! we’re listening, we care.”

classic skins ftw! we’re listening, we care, and we want to do right by y’all, old and new. stay tuned and thank you for sticking with us 👊 https://t.co/TziSRu8DDg

It turns out that if you yell loud enough, a multi-billion-dollar company will actually give you your pixels back for free. League Classic drops on July 29, 2026, and now we can finally enjoy our low-res nostalgia without filing for bankruptcy.
