Long time listener, first time caller;
As titled. The main concern here is jumping between divisions. Back wgen McGregor and DC did it, it truly felt special and now it feels like the thing to do the second you get a title on top of them losing more often than not.
Obviously guys like Conor and DC had done it prior but it feels like this trend started with Adensanya who went up and got schooled by Jan. Volk went up and got mopped twice. Islam went up and won but hasn’t defended in almost 8 months and there’s not even a rumor of when he’ll defend or against who. Ilia won it a year ago, defended for the first time a few days ago, and got his soul snatched. Alex moved up and got made to look like they chose a fan out of the crowd. Noy to mention with Ilia, he was already looking past his opponent and wanting to jump.up ANOTHER weight class to chase Islam.
There are levels to this, though because Adensanya had almost completely cleared the division. Same with Islam. Alex had a decent number of defenses and is also 38 so it was a “now or never” situation.
Anyways, what do you guys think of it all? Would you limit these opportunities? What would the base criteria be for you to allow it? Personally, I feel like “two division champion” has lost a lot of its luster lately and the belts being forfeited are becoming a silver medal worn as gold for whoever takes it.
