As successful as Baldur’s Gate 3 has been, the game isn’t for everyone, myself included. I adore the world and characters, but the gameplay and pacing didn’t appeal to me. Warlock appears to address these specific issues, but it still has a lot to prove before it comes anywhere close to matching the pre-launch hype of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Following the official gameplay reveal at Gamescom 2026, which was introduced by Maggie Robertson, a lot more eyes are now firmly fixed on Warlock, which is due to release some time in 2027. Since it shares a universe with Baldur’s Gate 3, the comparisons are understandable, but from a gameplay standpoint, all signs suggest they couldn’t be further apart.
Warlock’s Gameplay Reveal Generates Major Hype
The official gameplay reveal of Warlock was advertised ahead of time for Opening Night Live during Gamescom 2026, which in some ways applies even more pressure as expectations start to build. Based on the initial responses we’re seeing online, it’s been a hit with gamers excited to see more of the world and story to come.
While the reveal was very combat-heavy, that seems by design to show how far removed this game is from Baldur’s Gate 3, which was a huge hit and also set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Warlock appears as though it will appeal less to gamers who care about rule sets and deep lore and will instead be a faster-paced romp through a dark fantasy open world.
In just under 10 minutes, we are introduced to the open world, methods of traversal, magical and melee combat, alchemy, and plenty of one-liners. In all seriousness, while this reveal has a lot going for it, there are valid concerns: the voice-line tone is a little lighter than it needs to be, and it clashes with the dire world the game is set in.
An Action Game For Those Who Didn’t Get On With Baldur’s Gate 3
If Baldur’s Gate 3 wasn’t a game you felt like you could get into for any reason, be it the sheer size of the world, the style of gameplay, or the reliance on deep storytelling, then Warlock is certainly giving us the impression it’s going to be a bit more accessible.
Fast-paced action gameplay but set in a fantasy world with plenty of platforming and traversal sees Warlock earn comparisons to the likes of The Witcher; granted, it’s hard to tell exactly what the scale of Warlock is until we see a lot more of it over the coming months.
With Dungeons & Dragons on the rise and following the meteoric success of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s nice to see Wizards of the Coast capitalizing on it to keep its properties in the spotlight in new and interesting ways. Sure, it could have just forced Baldur’s Gate 4 through the pipeline to keep talking about it until it eventually releases, but games like Warlock have all the potential in the world to surprise people, and based on the initial reaction to Warlock’s gameplay, it’s gained a lot of respect with this showing.
