While tidying away over 3,000 books in Librarian: Tidy Up The Arcane Library, you might have noticed there are four locked chests on the second floor. If you approach them, you’ll be informed that you need a key to unlock them, but the game won’t tell you anything about where to find them.
In fact, you could end up going through the whole game without ever opening any of them, since only one key is found through tidying up, and you technically don’t need what’s inside any of them to finish the game. That said, what’s inside will help you speed things along, so if that’s of any interest to you, then you’ll want to prioritize finding the keys right away.
All Locked Chest Key Locations
As you might assume, since there are four chests, two on each side of the library, there are also four keys that you’ll need to find. The first assumption is that they’re likely buried under the mountains of books on the first floor, but you’ll only find one this way. The other three you won’t find unless you intentionally seek them out, and two of them require unlocking the High Jump to reach them.
You do not need to wait until you reach a certain point to unlock the chests. Every chest can be unlocked as soon as you start the game, so this is one of the first things you should do as soon as you start a new playthrough. There is absolutely no reason to wait.
If you’re attempting the ‘Anti-Magic Master’ Achievement, Minor Magic does not count as magic in this case. So, you are still free to use all four of these abilities, and you absolutely should.
All keys and chests will have corresponding shapes on them, so once you have a key, be sure to look for the chest that has the matching symbol. It will not work on any of the others. For the location of every key in Librarian: Tidy Up The Arcane Library, please see the table below.

Crimson Octagon Key: High Jump Permit Annoyingly, this is the one key that’s in plain sight and still easy to miss. When you start the game, you’ll find a podium on the middle platform of the stairs, with the crest of the University of Celesthall above it. At the bottom of the crest sign on the wall, you should see a key dangling. |
|
|
Golden Diamond Key: Large Carrying Capacity Potion Once you’ve unlocked the High Jump, you’ll be able to find this key inside one of the two white vases sitting on the banister of the stairs. Specifically, if you’re standing by the podium and facing the library, the vase will be on your left. To see the key, jump onto the railing and approach until you can look directly down into the vase. |
|
|
Azure Star Key: Small Carrying Capacity Potion After you unlock the High Jump, you’ll be able to reach heights you couldn’t before. Specifically, you’ll be able to reach the top of shelves 2O and 2P, where you’ll find this key. These shelves are at the end of the library on the second floor, and the key will be near the University crest on top of them. |
|
|
Emerald Club Key: Run Permit This key doesn’t require any special ability to reach it, but you will need to do some digging. In the center of the library, there are two large tables with bench seats on either side. To find this key, you will need to clear off the bench seat of the table closest to the stairs. Specifically, it will be the bench on the right side of the table, if you’re standing at the podium and facing the library. It will be covered in piles of books, but you don’t necessarily need to put them away. Instead, you can pick them up and toss them aside. |
|
You will need to find the Crimson Octagon Key and unlock the High Jump to find the Golden Diamond Key and the Azure Star Key. Without the High Jump, you wouldn’t be able to reach the areas where these keys are hidden.

How To Unlock Minor Magic
While playing, you’ve likely been progressively leveling up your Major Magic and wondering why you haven’t gained access to the Minor Arcana. Well, the Minor Magic you’re looking for is what’s inside each of the four chests. Unlike the Major Magic, the Minor Magic primarily focuses on traversal abilities and permanent upgrades, and less on temporary spells.
Unlocking all four Minor Magic abilities will also unlock the ‘Life Hack Wizard’ achievement.
For the most part, Minor Magic is going to be more important for those who are attempting the challenge of completing the game in under three hours. That said, they’re also good for players who are just looking for maximum efficiency. Keep in mind, this is a one-time upgrade. You will not be able to spend points to increase these abilities, as that is strictly for Major Magic abilities.

Explanation |
|---|---|

High Jump |
This Minor Magic ability allows you to gain the ability to jump permanently. The primary use is to reach the second floor without using the stairs, which can certainly help if you’re going for the under three hours achievement, but you’ll also be able to reach the areas where you’ll find two of the other keys. If you are attempting to unlock the achievement by completing the game in under three hours, this is the one ability you should consistently be using. Do not waste time on the stairs. |
|
Carry Capacity +3 |
This potion will increase your carrying capacity by three, so you’ll now be able to carry 13 books instead of 10. It does not matter which carrying capacity Minor Magic you unlock first. |
|
Carry Capacity +2 |
This potion will increase your carrying capacity by two, so if you’ve also picked up the larger potion, then you’ll now be able to carry 15 books in total. It does not matter which carrying capacity Minor Magic you unlock first. |
|
Run |
This ability allows you to run inside the library to speed up your shelving process. The game has no time limit, so you don’t necessarily need this unless you’re attempting the achievement related to completing the game in under three hours, but it’s still nice to have. Out of all the Minor Magics, though, this is the least important ability. |
