For the most part, Marvel’s Wolverine is a linear action game that doesn’t ask the player to deviate too much from the main path and all of its gory combat.
There are some things that you’ll need to keep an eye out for as you play through the game, though, including Nightmare Doors that are tied to Logan’s memory. Here’s what you need to know.
What Nightmare Doors Do
Early on in Wolverine’s campaign, Nathaniel Essex will attempt to peer into Logan’s mind to see his memories. This unlocks the Nightmare Doors, which can be found throughout the campaign and have specific trials attached to them that you’ll need to beat. They’re basically challenge rooms and will award you AP that is used to unlock and equip Augmentations.
Nightmare Doors are tied to Logan’s lost memories, and beating each one will let him remember a piece of his storied past. They’re not too difficult to track down, either, as purple tree-like roots will sprout up and guide you to the titular doors. Once you go through one, you’ll end up in the Nightmare Cabin and be able to take on its trial, replay missions, and reflect on memories.
Each time you complete a Nightmare Door, you’ll unlock a new memory in the cabin for Logan to reminisce on, giving you more background into his character and past, which are represented through wood carvings. Depending on which medal grade you got for the challenge, the colour of the memory will change, quickly letting you know whether you need to replay the challenge to get a higher score.
As mentioned above, the first Nightmare Door is part of the game’s story and can’t be missed. You will need to beat it in 55 seconds to get the Adamantium medal, however.
Once you’ve found and completed all of the Nightmare Doors in Marvel’s Wolverine, you’ll unlock one final memory that almost functions as the story’s epilogue. Beyond just wanting to collect everything, this should serve as the main reason for going after the Nightmare Doors in the first place, to make sure you see the entirety of Logan’s story. Let’s get into where to find them all.
The One Who Got Away
The very first Nightmare Door you can find “in the wild” is located in The One Who Got Away. As you chase Jean Grey through the forest area, you’ll reach a more open section. This door is pretty hard to miss, as the purple roots will directly guide you to the door on the left and Logan will even comment on it.
This Nightmare Door’s challenge is a unique one focused on traversal. You’ll need to reach the end of the race in 57 seconds to get the Adamantium medal, but it’s pretty easy as long as you don’t get stuck at any point or fall off and have to respawn.
Raise Some Hell
Wolverine’s next Nightmare Door is found in Raise Some Hell, and it’s just a little bit harder to find than the last. After you learn the “hot claws” technique and leave the building full of lava, you’ll find yourself in a courtyard. Stick to the right, and you’ll see some roots pop up and lead you to the Nightmare Door in between some crates.
Raise Some Hell’s Nightmare Door tasks you with killing three snipers dotted around the arena in 45 seconds for the Adamantium medal. That might sound difficult, but it’s easily done by just ignoring all of the other enemies and heading straight for the snipers for a quick takedown.
Something Much Stronger
Once again, you won’t struggle to find this next Nightmare Door. Early on in the chapter, you’ll encounter a wolf and free it from some branches. Immediately after you’ve done this, head to the right instead of going left to find the door.
Similarly to the door in The One Who Got Away, you’ll be tasked with completing a traversal challenge. This one is a bit more linear than the last, so just follow the path and try not to respawn for another easy Adamantium medal if you beat it in 43 seconds.
Mutant Detected
Fairly late into the mission, Logan’s healing factor is put to the test against a massive jet turbine. Once you’ve beaten this setpiece and made it to the other side, stay on the left side and interact with the door to open it up. Keep following this path and you’ll eventually run into the Nightmare Door.
The challenge of this level’s door is to kill all nine of the enemies in 50 seconds for the Adamantium medal. That may sound incredibly easy at this point in the game, but inhibitors keep you from regenerating health and make Logan a pretty squishy target. If you want the Adamantium medal, ignore the inhibitors and take out the enemies as fast as you can.
Special moves are absolutely your best friend here, as they can make very easy work of most of the basic soldiers.
One Last Mission
After you leave the Princess Bar early on in the mission, immediately head right and you’ll see the Nightmare Door’s thorns pop up, leading you to a nearby alleyway. The challenge of this chapter’s door is to survive waves of enemies in a gauntlet, and it’s easily the most involved challenge type in the game.
To get the Adamantium medal, you’ll need to survive around 22 waves of enemies to get 40,000 points. This sounds like a lot, but you can pick up buffs every five rounds that make things a lot easier, including one that kills enemies when you parry them. You can also revisit this challenge later in the game to make things a bit easier on yourself.
Getting the Gold and Adamantium medals for these challenges will go towards unlocking the Future Fugitive and Hellverine costumes.
Get Angry
This chapter’s Nightmare Door is a pretty easy one to find, although it is fairly late into the level. After you deal with a telepath and unlock the sword-based critical strike move, Logan will find himself back in the real world. The Nightmare Door will be to the right of where you spawn, making it nearly unmissable.
Get Angry’s Nightmare Door tasks you with killing three enemies using Critical Strikes in 55 seconds for the Adamantium medal. The easiest way to do this is to let yourself get impaled with a sword to get an instant Critical Strike opportunity. Just watch your health!
Bad Blood
For once, the Nightmare Door is pretty early on in the level, after Logan chases a Hand chunin into a trap. Once they’re dealt with, you’ll be spawned in front of the building that can be climbed to reach the Nightmare Door, making it another basically unmissable one.
Bad Blood’s Nightmare Door is another traversal challenge, and you’ll need to beat it in 57 seconds to get the Adamantium medal. The path for this one is pretty linear, so just don’t fall and spam the jump button when climbing to get to the end swiftly.
Death Comes To Death
After watching the cameras and locating the Helix Engine, go downstairs and you’ll see the path to the Nightmare Door just ahead and to the left. The challenge of this door is another traversal-based one, and you’ll need to clear it in 47 seconds to get the Adamantium medal. As always, just follow the path and don’t cause a respawn to make this easier.
Sinister Tidings
Sinister Tidings has one of the easiest Nightmare Doors to find in the whole game. After you wake up in Shiro’s house, head outside onto the balcony at the start of the mission. This Door is another gauntlet challenge, and you’ll need 40,000 points for the Adamantium medal. It took me around 23 waves to get that score, which sounds tough but really isn’t that bad.
If you’re struggling with the Gauntlets, just remember that you can always lower the difficulty just to get through them.
Way Down Low
Way Down Low is a more open mission, but the Nightmare Door is found right at the end in a more linear section. After Logan and Jean get onto the radio to Lowtown, take the zipwire down to some nearby rooftops, and you’ll see the Nightmare Door right in front of you.
The challenge of this Door is to kill two Reaver Crushers, the bigger enemies that can take a lot of damage. You’ll need to do it in 1:15 to get the Adamantium medal, which is easy enough if you just focus on them and use your special moves to drain their health as fast as possible.
Roll The Dice
This Nightmare Door is found when you reach the elevator in the backrooms. Head to the left after doing so to find the Nightmare Door. The challenge here is a traversal one that requires you to reach the exit in 57 seconds to get the Adamantium medal. As ever, just follow the path as cleanly as possible.
I’m Still Here
This was the final Nightmare Door that I had to find, and it was a bit of a struggle. Once you leave the Noodle Bar, follow the path until you see a door with an enemy impaled on it. Head to the right instead of going through it to find the Nightmare Door. This is the final traversal challenge in the game, and you’ll need to reach the exit in 50 seconds to get the Adamantium Medal.
This Was The Dream
The very final Nightmare Door to find in Marvel’s Wolverine can be reached early on in the level after Jean hacks the Sentinel and you defeat some Reavers. Once you do, the Nightmare Door will appear in the same room right where you spawn as the cutscene ends.
Fittingly, this is the third Gauntlet challenge in the game, and you’ll need another 40,000 to get the Adamantium Medal. This is the hardest Gauntlet of the bunch, but it’s pretty easy with the Calculating totem buff that kills on parries. Once you’ve found this last door, you’ll get the Pathways of the Mind Silver trophy.
Best There Is
The very final Nightmare Door challenge in the game is unlocked once you’ve found and beaten every other Door in the game. Once you do, you can select it from the Nightmare Cabin. It’s the final Gauntlet in the whole game, and you’ll need 45,000 points for the Adamantium medal, which took me around 25 waves.
Once you’ve beaten this challenge, you’ll unlock a special epilogue scene that explains more of Logan and Jean’s relationship. You’ll also get the Repressed Memories Gold trophy for all of your trouble.
