Ahead of the tournament that runs from mid-January to the end of the month, Tennis Australia has announced that Ground Pass sales will be capped for the first time.
The decision has been made after huge crowds in the first week of the 2026 event left many fans frustrated.
Attendees at the Australian Open were forced to deal with long queues and a less-than-enjoyable experience.
And it’s fair to say that many Wimbledon fans endured a very similar experience at the All England Club this year.
Complaints about overcrowding were commonplace, suggesting that a cap is perhaps the only way forward.
Of course, only time will tell if the operation is a success at the upcoming Australian Open, which Wimbledon should be watching very closely.
Australian Open fans welcome Ground Pass sales cap
As mentioned, it is far too early to evaluate what will happen with the ticket cap, but many fans have already made their feelings on the matter clear.
It has been met with overwhelming support by fans on social media, with one writing on X: “This is great, all Slams and indeed tournaments should do this.”
Others agreed, saying: “Hooray for common sense!” and “Great move! The initial couple of days haven’t been enjoyable for the last couple of years.”
And further agreement from another read: “A good move for fans over profit is not one you see often. The record attendance many events have been seeing is great for the sport but not necessarily for fans, has caused overcrowded grounds.”

However, a handful of fans have also raised concerns, worried that the cap could have a negative impact elsewhere.
“So it’ll go up in price. Yay,” one commented, while others said: “Prices up then too?” and “Guaranteed this means arena tickets go up in price.”
Again, that is a matter that Wimbledon must closely monitor, with an increase in ticket prices certain to frustrate fans of the prestigious event.
