Dust off your mechanical keyboards and get your energy drinks ready because BlizzCon 2026 is officially leaning into maximum nostalgia. Blizzard just dropped a massive update on what is waiting for us in Anaheim this September, and they are bringing back the absolute titans of yesteryear.

We already knew the standard world championships were locked in, but the real star of the show is the newly announced Blizzard Classic Cup. This event is a beautiful excuse to pull legendary players out of retirement, put them on a stage, and watch them ruin friendships over old-school RTS and MOBA matches.

The Ultimate Drafting Drama with Tastosis

To make things even more entertaining, Blizzard handed the steering wheel to the most iconic casting duo in esports history. Nick “Tasteless” Plott and Dan “Artosis” Stemkoski are stepping out from behind the commentator desk to act as team captains.

Before the weekend kicks off, they will be drafting an all-star roster of retro legends into two competing squads. They will also be casting some of the matches, meaning we get the full, authentic 2010s experience. The teams will spend the weekend fighting for pride, a trophy, and a chunk of a cool $100,000 prize pool.

StarCraft Royalty and the Return of the Foreigner

starcraft legacy match

The match announcements are already hitting like a freight train of nostalgia. For StarCraft: Remastered, we are getting BoxeR versus Nal_rA. If you watched competitive Brood War in the mid-2000s, you probably just gasped. BoxeR is practically the blueprint for modern esports athletes, and Nal_rA was the master of mind-bending Protoss strategies.

If you prefer your sci-fi strategy with slightly updated graphics, the StarCraft II Legacy Match is throwing IdrA and MC back into the arena. This was one of the most delightfully chaotic rivalries of the Wings of Liberty era. IdrA was the brilliantly talented, notoriously grumpy western hope, while MC was the highly decorated Protoss president who loved to trash-talk. Expect fireworks, or at least a very fast rage-quit.

Reopening Old Wounds in Warcraft and Heroes of the Storm

The trip down memory lane does not stop in space. The Warcraft III Legacy Match is pairing up ToD and TeD, two champions who spent nearly a decade passing trophies back and forth. TeD holds a slight historical edge in their head-to-head record, so ToD is undoubtedly looking for some long-awaited Anaheim revenge.

Meanwhile, Heroes of the Storm is making a triumphant return to the BlizzCon stage with a massive grudge match. They are reconstructing the exact finals matchup from 2018, putting Team Dignitas up against Gen.G. Dignitas is bringing back four members of their original 2018 roster, while Gen.G is packing an all-star lineup of Korean veterans.

It is the perfect fanservice for the MOBA community that refuses to let the game die.

The Rest of the BlizzCon Chaos

If you want to look forward instead of backward, the modern esports circuits are also bringing plenty of heat to the convention center. The Overwatch World Cup is heading to its final stages, with the top 16 nations fighting in South Korea this August before the final eight land in Anaheim.

Over in the World of Warcraft section, both the Arena World Championship and the Mythic Dungeon International wrapped up their qualifiers. The AWC is seeing the historic return of Chinese teams to the global stage after a long seven-year absence, which is bound to completely scramble the competitive meta. The MDI is also returning to its classic speedrunning format, meaning we get to watch top guilds completely break dungeon mechanics in real-time.

Whether you are there for the retro casual vibes or the high-stakes modern drama, September is going to be wild.
