Coco Gauff secured her place in the US Open quarter-finals after overcoming the challenge of Iva Jovic on Monday evening.

Gauff, who is still fighting for the world number one ranking in New York, defeated the 18-year-old American 6-1, 6-4 inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In defeating Jovic, Gauff has set up an enticing clash with Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva.

Gauff offered her thoughts on the upcoming contest while speaking to reporters in Flushing Meadows on Monday.

Coco Gauff finds Mirra Andreeva’s serve and athleticism ‘impressive’

“It’s another tough match. Mirra is someone I always have tough matches with,” Gauff, who has a 5-0 record against the Russian, stated during her post-match press conference.

“They have leaned my way, but I think it’s similar to Karolina [Muchova] that every match could have almost gone either way.

“I think I only remember one of them being smooth here and that was three years ago here, when she was super young.

“She is obviously in a different mindset now, at the top of the game, coming off a Grand Slam win, so I expect her to approach the match completely different to before in the past.

“I think it’s going to be a really athletic and tough match, and hopefully I can take my opportunities when I get them.”

When asked to highlight what she finds ‘impressive’ about Andreeva, Gauff added: “She obviously serves well, is really athletic.

“She is kind of similar [to me]. She can play defence and offence and do everything well on the court.

“I think it’s going to be who can grit out those moments the most and it will come down to the wire, for sure.”

Andreeva came through a tough battle against Austrian Anastasia Potapova on Monday afternoon.

Andreeva triumphed 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 before consoling Potapova in the immediate aftermath.

Potapova injured herself shortly before the end of the match, inhibiting her play.

As for Andreeva, she will contest her quarter-final match against Coco Gauff at 11:30 am Eastern Time on Wednesday.

The winner of said match will play Elena Rybakina or qualifier Qinwen Zheng in the US Open semi-finals.

Mirra Andreeva’s US Open record

Andreeva is in the midst of her fourth US Open campaign.

The youngster made her debut at the event in 2023 when she was only 16 years old.
