If you recruited and trained the same character during multiple Part 1 paths in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, that work does not have to go to waste. After reaching Part 3, you can spend Karma Shards at the Shrine of Causality to merge the character’s alternate versions, adding their useful progression to the version you recruited in Part 3.
This makes duplicate recruitment worth planning for. Training the same character in different classes on different paths can give their Part 3 version access to a much wider selection of classes, abilities and combat arts.
How To Unlock Merge Causality
Merge Causality becomes available when you unlock Part 3 for the first time. The option appears at the Shrine of Causality, inside the Obelisk Chamber.
You can return to the Obelisk Chamber from any point in the story, so you do not need to merge every eligible character immediately.
How To Merge Different Versions Of A Unit
Before a unit can use Merge Causality, you must have:
- Recruited that character during more than one of the four Part 1 paths;
- Completed the relevant Part 1 path with that character recruited;
- Recruited the character again in Part 3.
Part 3 recruitment does not repeat the original requirements. Recruiting a character during a Part 1 path is enough to make that path’s version available once the same character joins you in Part 3.
Once those conditions are met:
- Travel to the Obelisk Chamber.
- Interact with the Shrine of Causality.
- Select Merge Causality.
- Choose the eligible unit you want to improve.
- Select the Part 1 path whose version you want the Part 3 unit to inherit from.
- Review the highlighted stat, skill-level, class and ability improvements.
- Spend the displayed number of Karma Shards to complete the merge.
What Carries Over With Merge Causality?
Merge Causality is an upgrade: useful progress from the selected Part 1 version is added to the accessible Part 3 unit without replacing stronger progress with something worse. Abilities and combat arts carry over, while any higher stats take over lower stats.
The merge preview lets you cycle through pages showing exactly what the unit will receive. These can include:
- Higher stats.
- Higher weapon or skill levels.
- Additional classes.
- Mastered-class abilities.
- Combat arts.
For example, the Seteth depicted above was recruited in both Cai’s Path and Theodora’s Path. The Theodora’s Path version had been reclassed as a Cataphract and mastered the class. Merging that version into the Part 3 Seteth therefore granted him access to Cataphract as well as Pavise, the ability earned by mastering it.
The Best Way To Use Merge Causality
The strongest approach is to recruit your favourite shared units on multiple Part 1 paths and develop each copy differently.
Instead of repeating the same build four times, use the separate paths to cover different parts of a character’s progression. One version might master a mounted class, another can train a different weapon type, and another can unlock useful abilities from a separate class line. When Part 3 begins, Merge Causality lets you consolidate those gains into one substantially more flexible unit.
Reclassing is free, which makes this much easier to exploit. You can deliberately move duplicate versions through different classes without paying a reclassing cost, then use Karma Shards to bring the resulting classes and mastery rewards together later.
This is particularly valuable for:
- Characters you expect to use throughout Part 3.
- Units who benefit from abilities found across multiple class lines.
- Characters whose weapon options you want to broaden.
- Saving the time it would take to retrain the same classes during Part 3.
Should You Recruit The Same Unit On Multiple Paths?
Short answer: Yes. If you already know that you want to use a particular character in Part 3, recruiting them on several Part 1 paths can produce a much stronger and more versatile final version.
The key is to train those versions differently. Recruiting the same character four times but giving every version an identical build offers far less value than dividing their class masteries, weapon training, and ability unlocks across the four paths. Plan those differences early, and Merge Causality becomes one of the most powerful long-term progression tools in Fortune’s Weave.
