In our forums, a longtime original Ping Eye 2 wedge player is asking how other loyalists handle one particular shot: a short-sided pitch from a tight lie.

Member @slantsflood said he has played an original Ping Eye 2 BeCu set from 1-iron through lob wedge for years. The challenge comes when the bounce and sole that work in many conditions feel less cooperative from firm, closely mown turf. He specifically wanted answers from players using the original Eye 2 rather than the later Eye 2 Plus.

The responses covered technique, equipment and course management.

  • @hook_or_slice suggested closing the face slightly from a tight lie because opening it can raise the leading edge.
  • @tatertot said he still opens the original Eye 2 for higher shots and has not found a modern Eye-style sole that completely replaces it.
  • @Dan Drake first brought the discussion back to target selection and avoiding the short-sided miss, then noted that the Eye 2 Plus addressed some of the sole concerns.

That is the tension with a distinctive wedge sole. The feature that gives a club its identity can also demand a very specific delivery when the lie gets tight. For original Eye 2 players, the answer may be less about finding one universal setup and more about knowing when to lower the leading edge, play a simpler shot or accept that the miss created the problem.
