Being the game that turned the series into a household name, the original Metal Gear Solid is still arguably one of, if not the most iconic, stealth video games of all time. Despite having numerous re-releases and even a strange reboot in the form of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, one way we’ve never been able to experience the original MGS is alongside a friend.
While Konami has not included multiplayer in any of the recent Metal Gear remastered collections, leaving the legacy game modes to remain largely unplayable to this day, one dedicated fan has managed the ambitious feat of bringing co-op into Metal Gear Solid. As spotted by GamesRadar, the mod creator Felipe on YouTube posted a video advertising some Pre-Alpha gameplay of the “world first” multiplayer mod that looks incredibly promising so far.
With the trailer showing some of the initial levels from the original Metal Gear Solid with not one, but two Solid Snakes running around Shadow Moses, the mod creator also detailed some of the changes that will make the project possible considering the “original game was never designed to support” the functionality.
Built upon the GOG version of Metal Gear Solid’s PC release, the mod creator stated that they’re trying to make as much of the game available in co-op as possible, although some sequences like the final jeep chase scene will likely still only be single-player. Even with some limitations, the mod will still offer unique mechanics like having separate cameras and inventories for each player.
To balance the fact that there are now two special agents running around Shadow Moses, Felipe also discussed increasing the HP of bosses and the number of reinforcements to make things still challenging, while letting players have the option to customize the experience further based on their own personal preferences.
You’ll Still Have To Play MGS With A Friend
Although the mod sounds incredibly ambitious for what it’s trying to accomplish, there is no estimated date for when we can expect the mod to be playable or even if all current features will be able to make it into the finished version, the fan-made mod is still an incredibly exciting project that can help fill in the gap left behind by the series’ official releases.
With the latest Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’s multiplayer mode being dead on arrival, community efforts are likely the only way we can expect a true comeback to the days of Metal Gear Online and other co-operative experiences from the Metal Gear Solid series.
