Subway is giving away thousands of free footlong sandwiches for Halloween, but customers will need to confess their worst lunchtime experiences for a chance to get one.
The sandwich chain announced its new “Lunchtime Horrors” promotion on October 12, inviting Americans to share disappointing meals they’ve had at other restaurants in exchange for a chance to win a $15 Subway gift card.
The giveaway comes after a Subway-commissioned survey found that 66% of American adults sometimes regret their lunch choices, with complaints ranging from expensive meals to food that leaves them hungry.
Subway’s Lunchtime Horrors promotion runs from October 12 through October 16, giving customers five days to enter for a chance to win a free sandwich.
To participate, customers need to visit the website and share a disappointing lunch experience.
Subway suggests examples like spending $20 on a smoothie that wasn’t filling, paying $25 for a disappointing salad, or eating a greasy burger that left them feeling sluggish.
The company is giving away 1,000 digital gift cards worth $15 each day, bringing the total to 5,000 gift cards throughout the promotion.
Winners can use their gift cards toward purchasing a Subway footlong sandwich, although entering does not guarantee a prize.
“We make sandwiches, not time machines. But we can give people something to look forward to at their next lunch,” said Subway Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Klein.
“Feed Your SUBconscious is an invitation to listen to that inner voice that knows what you really want. This Halloween, we’re giving Americans a chance to act on it, with thousands of freshly prepared Footlongs on us.”
The giveaway is part of Subway’s “Feed Your SUBconscious” campaign, which launched in September and features actor and comedian Will Arnett as the voice encouraging customers to choose Subway.
According to the company’s survey of 1,010 US adults, 34% said they regretted a lunch because it wasn’t filling enough, while 28% said their meal wasn’t worth the price.
Another 35% said they regretted eating unhealthy food, while 70% reported skipping lunch at least once a week.
Subway has offered unusual ways to score free food before. In April 2026, the chain launched its “Meatier Shower” promotion, giving customers a chance to win free Subway for a year if they discovered and verified a meteorite during the Lyrid Meteor Shower.
